Myanmar aquaculture development will bloom

The Myanmar Meteorology and Freshwater Aquaculture Seminar 2019 was held at the Myanmar Fisheries Federation（MFF）Conference Center on 10th August 2019. Htoo Thit Group, the largest aquatic feed enterprise from Myanmar and Nutriera Group, the largest aquatic technical solution supplier from China along with the Myanmar's most famous meteorologists conducted in-depth discussions on promoting rapid development of high-yield and high-efficiency aquaculture models in Myanmar.

Htoo Thit Group and Nutriera Group jointly organized the seminar and more than 200 participants attended it, which including senior officials, experts in aquaculture and meteorology from different countries such as Myanmar, China and the United States, as well as farmer representatives from major aquaculture areas in Myanmar. They including: Dr. Tun Lwin, chief meteorologist in Myanmar; Dr. Toe Nandar Tin and Dr. Nyi Nyi, Vice Chairman of MFF; Mr. U Win Kyaing, the secretary-general of MFF; U Nay Soe, Chairman of the Myanmar Aquaculture Association; Mr. U Zaw Lin, President of Htoo Thit Group, Mr. Winn Htut Aung, General Manager of Htoo Thit Group and Dr. Zhang Song, Vice President of Nutriera Group, led a team to attend the meeting and made a keynote report.

Myanmar is rich in freshwater resources. The branching rivers spread all over the country. The freshwater aquaculture area is nearly 500,000 acres. It is considered to be a country with the greatest growth potential for aquaculture in Southeast Asia. This year with insufficient supply of Rohu fish (Labeo rohita), its price goes very high and this makes a new round of aquaculture development.

However, more than 70% of aquaculture in Myanmar is still produced by feeding raw materials or from the fish-chicken polyculture without/with very few fish feed. These models restrict the development of aquaculture industry in Myanmar. Especially under the situation of high fish price, farmers are also difficult to quickly seize the opportunity to obtain high farming returns. Therefore, it is imperative to promote more efficient farming models.

The annual average temperature is 27℃ in Myanmar, which is suitable for aquaculture throughout the year. However, due to the tropical monsoon climate, and the influence of meteorological changes on aquaculture cannot be ignored. Dr. Tun Lwin, the chief meteorologist of Myanmar not only analyzed the characteristics of climate change in Myanmar over the past 40 years, but also focused on forecasting climate change and its impact on aquaculture in the second half of this year as well as in the coming years. He suggested that farmers should plan the breeding time reasonably, take preventive measures against extreme climate and reduce the risk of aquaculture, which played an important guiding role in the development of high-yield and high-efficiency model of aquaculture in Myanmar.

Prevention and control of common diseases and water quality

For developing a high-yield intensive model, disease control and water quality management are very key technical points. Dr. Nant Yin Yin Myint, aquaculture technical expert of Htoo Thit Group, and Mr. Julio He, aquaculture technical expert of Nutriera Group in Myanmar, jointly made a report on common disease control and water quality management.

Dr. Zhang Song gave a report titled Suggestions on the farming model and new species in Myanmar at the meeting. Based on the current status of aquaculture in Myanmar, he shared advanced farming models and techniques of Chinese carps and Vietnamese pangasius. And he suggested two high-yield breeding models for Rohu, and these models had been successfully proved in Myanmar. And if they can be quickly introduced to the farmers and replicated, the aquaculture industry will be accelerated in Myanmar.
